Use your Tolstoy library in Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI clients

Connect your Tolstoy library to AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT to browse, search, and edit your videos and images from chat.

Written by Nick Viduya

Tolstoy Library brings your video and image library directly into any AI chat. Once connected, you can ask Claude or ChatGPT to browse your assets, find a specific video, pull up product connections, or rename something — without leaving the chat window.

What you can do:

After connecting, you can ask things like:

"Show me my 20 most recent assets in Tolstoy"

"Find videos in my library tagged with @bellacosmetic"

"Show me the full details of my newest product video, including any tagged products"

"Pull up my most recent product image and write three Instagram captions for it"

"Find my asset called 'summer launch' and rename it to 'Summer launch hero — final'"

"Mark that asset as a favorite so I can find it later"

The AI client sees your assets as interactive cards — click "Use this image" on any card to bring that asset into the conversation for follow-up work (captions, alt text, ad copy, etc.).

How to connect:

You'll need a Tolstoy account (any plan, including free trial) and an account on the AI client.

Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop)

1. Open Claude → Settings → Connectors

2. Click Add custom connector

3. Name it Tolstoy Library

5. Click Connect → sign in with your Tolstoy account

6. Done. Ask Claude to use your library.

ChatGPT (web, iOS, Android)

1. Open ChatGPT → Settings → Apps & connectors

2. Search for Tolstoy Library (after listing) or paste the URL in Developer mode: https://apilb.gotolstoy.com/mcp/v1/library/mcp

3. Sign in with your Tolstoy account when prompted

Other clients (Cursor, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Goose, Perplexity, etc.)

The Tolstoy platform has step-by-step setup guides for 13+ clients. Open your Tolstoy workspace and go to Settings → MCP → Library tab for one-click installs and copy-paste commands.

What's included

Tolstoy Library gives the AI client four tools:

List recent assets — your 20 newest uploads and imports

Search assets — find by name or UGC creator handle

Get asset details — name, type, thumbnail, tagged products, playlists, Shopify tags, and (for images) the full-resolution file inline

Update asset — rename or mark as favorite

What's not included

To keep this connector approval-safe and focused, the following are intentionally not supported:

No AI generation — Library only browses and edits content that already exists in your workspace. To generate new content, use the Tolstoy Studio MCP connector (separate listing).

No deletes — for safety, assets cannot be deleted via chat. Use the Tolstoy platform for that.

No public-web search — the connector only sees your own Tolstoy library, never the open internet.

Privacy and data

Tolstoy Library only accesses data in the workspace you authenticate with. Tools are scoped server-side to your appKey — there is no way to see or modify assets in another merchant's account.

Authentication uses standard OAuth 2.0 with PKCE; tokens are issued by AWS Cognito and verified on every request. No API keys are exchanged or stored client-side.

Troubleshooting

"No assets found in your library" — the workspace you authenticated with is empty or filtered. Make sure you connected the right Tolstoy account, and that you have at least one video or image in your library.

"Connected elsewhere" status — your Tolstoy MCP session is tied to a different workspace. Open the Tolstoy platform, go to Settings → MCP, click the status dot, and disconnect. Then reconnect from the AI client.

Tool calls fail after the OAuth screen — make sure your AI client supports Streamable HTTP transport (most do). If your client supports only legacy stdio MCP, use the mcp-remote bridge — instructions are in the Tolstoy platform setup guide for OpenClaw.

ChatGPT doesn't show the connector — Tolstoy Library is currently under review for the ChatGPT app directory. Until it's listed, add it as a custom connector via Developer Mode.
