How to use Product Linking Rules

Written by Mikaela Lasig

Product Linking Rules helps you automatically group related products based on shared product tags.

How it works

You create a rule using either:

  • Tag Name: matches one exact tag

  • Tag Prefix: matches tags that start with the same text

Once the rule is saved, Tolstoy scans your products and links the ones that match.

Examples

  • Tag Name = summer-set
Tolstoy links products that all have the exact tag summer-set.

  • Tag Prefix = color:
Tolstoy looks for tags like color:red, color:blue, and color:green, then links products that share the same full tag.

How to create a Product Linking Rule

  1. Open Products β†’ Go to Linking Rules β†’ Click Add Rule

  2. Select Tag Name or Tag Prefix

  3. Enter the tag or prefix you want to use β†’ Click Save

Important

The text field is not only a name for the rule. It should contain the real tag value or tag prefix that Tolstoy will use for matching.

What Product Linking Rules supports today

  • Automatic product linking by exact tag

  • Automatic product linking by tag prefix

  • Background syncing after the rule is created

  • Viewing matched product groups inside the rule

Current limitations

Product Linking Rules currently supports simple tag-based matching only. It does not yet support:

  • Multiple conditions

  • AND/OR logic

  • Exclusions

  • Advanced custom rule-building

Troubleshooting

If you only see a simple input field and do not see more rule-builder options, that is expected for the current version of the feature. Product Linking Rules is designed today as a lightweight tag-based linking tool, not a full advanced rule builder.

If you want, I can also turn these into a more polished Zendesk-style version with subject line, macros, and shorter help-center formatting.
