How to edit your migrated Tolstoy widgets

Learn what changed after automatic widget migration, when you can keep your embed code, and how to edit design and media.

Written by David T

Migrated widgets now open in AI Widget Builder. Use Widget Chat to request design changes and the Media panel to manage the videos and images your widget displays.

This guide applies to existing widgets automatically migrated by Tolstoy. You normally do not need to recreate or reinstall them. Your existing subscription continues to apply, and some AI-assisted edits require available credits.

How to Set Up

If your existing widget has been automatically migrated, it keeps the same publish ID, the identifier used by its installation. Supported existing embed code and Shopify blocks can stay in place.

  1. Go to Widgets in Tolstoy and select your widget.

  2. If you see “This widget has moved to AI,” click Open AI widget.

  3. To change the design, describe what you want in Widget Chat. For example: “Make the story thumbnails smaller” or “Change the title font.”

  4. To manage content, open Media and review the playlist and the videos or images it includes.

  5. For per-product ordering, scroll to Media preview, find and expand the product, then drag its assets into your preferred order.

How to Publish

The automatic migration normally does not require you to publish or install your existing live widget again. Your current plan’s publishing requirements still apply.

For later changes:

  1. Save your media changes when Save is shown. Some media and ordering changes save automatically.

  2. Review the widget preview.

  3. For design or code changes, click Publish update when prompted.

  4. Refresh the affected page on your website and check the result.

Best Practices

  • Make edits in the migrated AI widget rather than the older editor.

  • Check the widget’s content and appearance on desktop and mobile after changes.

  • If an update does not appear, contact Support before recreating or reinstalling the widget.

Troubleshooting / FAQs

Do I need to replace my embed code?

Normally, no. Automatically migrated widgets keep their publish ID and supported existing installation. For custom integrations, ask Tolstoy Support to confirm before changing the installation.

Do I have to use chat for every change?

No. Use Widget Chat for design requests and the Media panel to manage content. Per-product ordering is available in Media preview.

Why am I seeing a credit message?

Some AI-assisted edits require available credits. Contact Tolstoy Support so we can check your allowance and explain your options.

What if videos are missing or my updates are not appearing?

Contact Tolstoy Support before recreating or reinstalling the widget. Share the affected page URL and a screenshot or short description of what you are seeing.

Does this apply to a new or manually recreated widget?

No. New widgets and widgets created through Recreate with AI may have different publishing and installation steps. Follow the instructions for that widget.
