How to Configure Photo Upload for AI Shopper

Learn how to configure Photo Upload for AI Shopper so customers can upload images and receive personalized product recommendations

Written by Niezl

Introduction

Photo Upload allows customers to submit an image through AI Shopper for personalized experiences such as Virtual Try-On. Clear, brand-specific instructions help customers upload suitable photos, improve generation quality, and increase shopping confidence.

No paid plan is required to configure or publish the AI Shopper widget. However, virtual try-ons and other AI-generated results consume Shopper tokens, so an available token balance is required.

How to Set Up

  1. In Tolstoy, go to Virtual Try-On See It On You.

  2. Start setup.

  3. Expand the features until you reach the Upload flow part. Configure the following:

    • Top Text: Introduce the photo-upload step and explain what the customer will receive.

    • Body Text: Add short photo instructions or benefits. Place each instruction on a separate line.

    • Upload Button Text: Customize the call to action, such as “Upload a full-body photo” or “Upload a photo of your face.”

    • Default Silhouette: Choose the example silhouette customers see. Available options include male, female, beauty, and custom.

    • Photo validation: Set validation rules such as clear, full-length photo, front-facing pose, good lighting, etc.

  4. If you select Custom for the silhouette or preview image, click the image area and upload your own visual.

  5. Review the Preview to confirm that the text, image, and button appear correctly.

  6. Before showing the result, decide when identity appears in the shopper journey. The best default asks after their photo passes checks.

    • No sign-in required
Anyone can generate; a dismissible prompt to sign in and save appears after the result.

    • Sign in before viewing the result (Recommended)
Photo is checked first, so sign-up feels earned.

Changes are saved automatically.

Optional Virtual Try-On settings

Under Advanced Settings, you can configure the following:

  • Enhanced try-ons - Magazine-quality version with pro styling and background.

  • Animated try-ons - Turn the result into a short motion clip.

  • Size recommendation - Show a lightweight size hint on top of the generated result. Requires the Size guide skill.

  • Set a weekly try-on limit for each customer.

  • Sensitive image handling - Flagged photos are rejected with a polite explanation when Block is selected.

Best Practices

  • Use male or female silhouettes when customers should upload a clear full-body image.

  • Use the beauty silhouette for face-based experiences such as shade matching.

  • Tell customers to upload a well-lit, unobstructed photo of one person.

  • Keep the top text short and action-oriented.

  • Use specific button text so customers know what kind of photo is required.

  • Place each body-text instruction on a separate line for readability.

  • Use a custom silhouette that clearly demonstrates the ideal pose and framing.

  • Set a weekly usage limit to manage token consumption.

  • Test the complete experience on desktop and mobile before promoting it.

Troubleshooting / FAQs

Why doesn’t the photo-upload option appear?

Confirm that Virtual Try-On is enabled under Settings → Website Agent → Agent Features. The upload option usually appears when a customer requests a try-on or when AI Shopper determines that a photo is needed.

Why was a customer’s photo rejected?

For standard fashion try-ons, the photo should:

  • Clearly show one person.

  • Include enough of the person’s body for the selected product.

  • Be well lit and in focus.

  • Avoid additional people or obstructed poses.

  • Show a person who meets the platform’s age requirements.

Face-only images may be rejected unless the beauty silhouette is selected.

Why isn’t my custom silhouette showing?

Confirm that the upload completed successfully and wait for the settings-saved confirmation. Refresh the page and check that Custom is still selected.

Do I need to click Save after editing the upload modal?

No. Changes are saved automatically. Wait for the success notification before leaving the page.

Can I restore the original settings?

Yes. Click Reset to default in the Virtual Try-On settings.

Why can customers upload photos but not generate results?

Check your available Shopper token balance. Photo upload may remain accessible even when there are not enough tokens to generate a try-on.

Will changing these settings require republishing?

Settings are saved to the AI Shopper configuration automatically. If the widget is already live, refresh the storefront and test the updated experience. Republish if the changes do not appear.
