How to Create and Publish an Embed

Learn how to create, customize, and publish a Tolstoy Embed video tile on your website or Shopify store.

Introduction

Embed lets you add a single Tolstoy video tile anywhere on your site, such as a product page, landing page, or custom section. It helps merchants highlight product videos, UGC, tutorials, or shoppable content exactly where shoppers are making decisions.

You can create and customize an Embed before upgrading, but publishing Embed widgets requires a paid Tolstoy Player plan. If you are on a free plan, you will be prompted to start a trial or upgrade when publishing.

How to Set Up

  1. In Tolstoy, go to Widgets ➜ All templates ➜ Shoppable videos ➜ Embed

  2. Create my own

  3. Provide clear instructions to the agent in the chatbox on exactly what you’d like to build—this can include details like padding, border radius, play button style, and more.
    ​


    If the embed is intended for product pages, make sure to link the appropriate videos to the correct products so everything displays as expected.

How to Publish

  1. Click Publish.
    ​

  2. If prompted, upgrade your plan or start a free trial.

  3. For Shopify stores:

    • If prompted, click Open Shopify theme.

    • In Shopify, go to App embeds and turn Tolstoy on. Click Save.
      ​

    • Copy your Tolstoy Embed Code.
      ​

    • Click Add block or open the relevant Shopify template.

    • Add the Tolstoy Builder block .
      ​

    • Paste the Widget Code into the block settings. Save the Shopify theme.
      ​

  4. If you are not using Shopify, copy the embed code from Tolstoy and paste it where the Embed should appear on your site.

  5. For product-specific embeds, replace PRODUCT_ID with the product’s unique ID.

  6. Click Publish in Tolstoy and check the live page.

Best Practices

Place the Embed near high-intent areas, such as product images, descriptions, add-to-cart buttons, or comparison sections. Use short, product-specific videos so shoppers immediately understand the value. Test the page on desktop and mobile after publishing, especially if you changed spacing, autoplay, captions, or controls.

Troubleshooting / FAQs

Why am I asked to upgrade when I publish?
Publishing Embed widgets requires a paid Tolstoy Player plan.

Why is the Embed not showing on Shopify?
Make sure the Tolstoy app embed is turned on in Shopify, the theme is saved, the Tolstoy Builder block was added to the correct template, and the Widget Code matches the project.

Why are the wrong videos showing?
Check that the correct videos are added to the project and, for product pages, that the product ID is correct.
​

I do not see the Tolstoy Builder block in Shopify. What should I do?
Use the embed code from the publish instructions, or make sure the Tolstoy app embed is enabled for the active theme.
​

How do I unpublish the Embed?
Open the Embed project in Tolstoy and click Pause. To remove the placement entirely, also remove the Shopify block or embed code from your site.
