How to Create and Publish Interactive Quiz

Learn how to create, customize, publish, and troubleshoot an Interactive Quiz widget on Tolstoy’s new platform.

Introduction

Interactive Quiz lets you guide shoppers through a series of questions and show personalized results, product recommendations, or next steps based on their answers.

It helps merchants recommend the right products, collect shopper preferences, improve conversion, and create a more guided shopping experience.

You can create and preview the quiz in Tolstoy. Publishing it to your live store requires a paid Shoppable Videos plan.

How to Set Up

  1. From the Tolstoy new platform, go to Widgets.

  2. Open Templates.

  3. Select Interactive Quiz template if available in your workspace.

  4. A pre-built template loads for you. But you can still build your own.
    ​

  5. In the widget workspace, describe the quiz you want to create in the agent's text box. For example:
    ​“Create an interactive skincare quiz that asks about skin type, skin concern, and budget, then recommends products.”

  6. Add or review the quiz flow:

    • Questions

    • Answer choices

    • Result logic

    • Product recommendations

    • Email capture, if needed

  7. If the quiz collects shopper responses, open the Customer Data panel.
    ​

  8. Choose whether responses should be saved for the widget and, when available, synced to the Shopify customer profile.

  9. Preview the quiz and test the full flow from first question to final result.

  10. Make sure the recommendations, buttons, and links go to the correct products or pages.

How to Publish

  1. In the quiz workspace, click Publish.

  2. If prompted, upgrade to a paid plan.

  3. Once published, open the publish dropdown and copy the embed code.

  4. In Shopify, open your theme editor.

  5. Add a Tolstoy Builder or Custom Liquid block to the page or template where the quiz should appear.

  6. Paste the embed code into the Widget Code field.
    ​

  7. Click Save.

  8. Open your live store and complete the quiz as a shopper to confirm it works.

If you want the quiz to appear on multiple pages, add the Tolstoy Builder block to each relevant Shopify template.

Best Practices

  • Keep the quiz short. Three to six questions is usually enough.

  • Ask questions that directly affect the recommendation.

  • Use simple answer choices that shoppers can understand quickly.

  • Show a clear result at the end.

  • Link recommended products directly to product pages.

  • Add email capture only when it supports a useful follow-up.

  • Test every answer path before publishing.

  • Review collected responses to improve product recommendations over time.

Troubleshooting / FAQs

Why is Tolstoy asking me to upgrade before publishing?
Publishing an Interactive Quiz requires a paid Shoppable Videos plan.

I do not see an Interactive Quiz template. What should I use?
Start with Custom JS Widget and describe the quiz you want Tolstoy to create.

The quiz is published, but I do not see it on my store.
Make sure the Tolstoy Builder block was added to the correct Shopify page or template, the embed code was pasted, and the theme was saved.

The quiz answers are not being saved.
Check that the quiz is using Customer Data and that the shopper has completed a step that saves responses.

Can quiz responses be sent to Shopify or a marketing platform?
When supported, quiz responses can be saved to the Shopify customer profile or forwarded to connected marketing tools such as Attentive.

I updated the quiz, but the live version did not change.
Click Publish update after making changes.

How do I remove the quiz from my store?
Pause the widget in Tolstoy, or remove the Tolstoy Builder block from your Shopify theme.
